NEEDS ASSESSMENT 2 Leader Versus Manager Oftentimes the terms “Leader” and “Manager” are used interchangeably, however both have very different meanings. While both leaders and managers are vital in the workforce, there is a distinct difference between the two roles. Leaders tend to focus on the inspiration of vision, values and communication, while managers have a more defined focus of analysis, problem solving and planning . Managers are controlling, problem solving, and devising effective action; leaders are motivating and inspiring people and following through with meaningful actions (Cox, J. A. 2016). Nurse managers may not be good leaders, and leaders may not be good managers. Leaders can best be explained as having deliberate influence over groups to structure, guide, coordinate activities and build relationships ( Cox, J. A. 2016). Nurses may have an informal leadership role within their care team, a position that does not have designated authority but indirectly works, assisting other staff in fulfilling the plan of care and acting as a patient advocate. Nurse Leaders can be helpful when there is a new project, process or protocol in serving as a champion to encourage and facilitate change amongst peers. Managers have designated positions within an organization with direct responsibility for staff that they manager or supervise.
