Should all nurses be considered leaders?

Leadership is helping oneself and others to follow the right direction by building inspiration and creating a motivating factor. A leader has to possess specific skills for them to be useful in the leadership roles. To be an effective leader one needs to be an expert with relevant skills and knowledge in the specific field, create an inspiring vision of the future,  inspire people to engage in the process to attain the goal, manage the process of achievement, coach and build the team to be more efficient.

Nurses possess all these leadership skills and play an important role in ensuring the community attains the goal of good health and safe living conditions.

Nurses are experts in the field of healthcare provider services with skills and knowledge relevant enough to give directions on what to do to stay healthy. They offer lessons to the public about a healthy living style and enlighten community members about emerging health problems and the way forward to deal with the health issues.

Nurses also play a significant role in the community by advocating for patients and the public at large for better living standards and work conditions to protect them from disease-causing organisms. As leaders, health care providers act as role models for their subjects who are the community members. They participate in community improvement programs to make the environment better and disease free.

By getting involved in events like cleaning programs, nurses encourage society members always to keep their environments clean and accommodating.

A servant leader focuses on the well being and growth of the people and the group from which he belongs. He puts the needs of the subjects first and works to ensure their safety. Nurses work hard to provide the society is free from health problems.

They even go beyond to visit peoples’ homesteads to offer vaccinations to spread emergence and spread of diseases. Nurses do not exercise power over their subjects but are ready to provide assistance and guidance in case of a health issue which qualifies them as servant leaders. As servant leaders, nurses view their work as a calling and expect nothing in return for the duties they perform to keep the society healthy.
